Local SEO

How do customers in Iceland find a local business on Google?

Most of the time they search in Icelandic, look at the top three map results, and call one of them. Here is how to become one of those three, without paying for ads.

TL;DR: To get found on Google in Iceland: complete your Google Business Profile, write your website in Icelandic first (not just English), keep your name, address and phone identical everywhere, and make the site fast on mobile. The market is small, so a few focused pages can outrank much bigger companies.

Where Icelandic customers actually search

When someone in Reykjavík needs a plumber, a cleaner or a hair salon, the search usually starts and ends on Google: either the map pack (the three businesses shown with the map) or the first organic results. Directories like já.is still exist, but they are the second stop, not the first.

Two things make Iceland unusual. First, the market is tiny, so for most local services only a handful of businesses compete for any given search. Second, many of those businesses have weak or outdated websites. That combination means local SEO here is not a war of budgets. It is mostly a war of doing the basics properly.

Start with your Google Business Profile

The free Google Business Profile decides who shows up in the map pack, and the map pack gets the calls. Before touching your website:

  • Claim the profile and pick the most specific category you can, not a generic one.
  • Fill opening hours, service area, phone and website. Empty fields are lost rankings.
  • Add real photos of your work and your team. Stock photos convince nobody.
  • Ask happy customers for a review, and answer every review, including the bad ones.

A complete profile with steady reviews can start appearing in local results within days. It is the fastest win in this whole list.

Write your website in Icelandic first

This is the mistake we see most often: a local business with an English-only website. Your customers search in Icelandic. A search for a service in Icelandic faces far less competition than the same search in English, because most weak websites only compete on the English terms.

Practical version: one page per service, with the words your customers actually type. A cleaning company wants a page around the Icelandic terms for regular cleaning and deep cleaning, not a single page saying "services". English belongs on the site too, for expats and tourists, but as the second language, clearly linked, not as the main event.

The website basics that decide who gets the call

Google sends the visitor; the website has to convert them. The bar is not high, but it is specific:

  • One page per service, each answering one search intent.
  • Phone and WhatsApp visible without scrolling, on mobile.
  • Fast on a phone, because that is where local searches happen.
  • Real proof: photos of actual work, your real address, your real face if you are the brand.

Keep your name, address and phone identical everywhere

Google cross-checks your business data across your website, your Google Business Profile, já.is and social profiles. If your company name is written three different ways, or an old phone number survives on some directory, you look less trustworthy to the algorithm. Pick one exact spelling of name, address and phone, and use it everywhere. Boring work, real effect.

What we would not pay for

Our honest position, since this blog exists to be useful and not polite: do not start by buying a monthly "SEO package" with no listed deliverables, and do not pay for premium directory listings before the basics above are done. If an agency cannot tell you exactly which pages they will create or change, you are buying a report, not results. Fix the profile and the Icelandic pages first. Most local businesses in Iceland never need more than that to be found.

FAQ

Do I need to pay for ads to show up on Google in Iceland?

No. The map pack and organic results are free. Ads can make sense for competitive terms, but a complete Google Business Profile and Icelandic service pages are what earn the free positions.

Should my website be in Icelandic or English?

Both, with Icelandic first. Your customers search in Icelandic, and those searches have far less competition. English serves tourists and expats as a second layer.

How long does local SEO take in Iceland?

A Google Business Profile can start appearing in days. Website rankings usually move over weeks to a few months. Anyone promising a fixed position by a fixed date is selling something they cannot control.

What does a website that supports local SEO cost?

It depends on scope. See our website cost guide for Iceland for realistic ranges.
